BIO
J. W. Owens has an extensive background in the publishing business that includes 38 years of experience managing several Free Papers, Magazines and Newspapers in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia.

He also has worked as a corporate employee and print consultant for the New York Times.

J.W. Owens was Group Publisher of more than 30 publications and 2 printing plants, with marketing and sales and new product development in Florida for Mid Florida Newspaper Network, and was the founder, owner and publisher of the Okeechobee Pennysaver and The Times. He is also the past owner and publisher of three Pennysavers, two newspapers and several monthly and annual magazines.

He works as a consultant for several companies in the Southeast region to organize, motivate and lead sales teams in a wide range of sectors. He specializes in startups, turning around new products, online products, opening up new territories and working with people in any aspect of the free paper business.

His service to the free paper industry is outstanding. A longtime member of the board of directors of the Community Papers of Florida (CPF, now FMA), and he twice served as the association's president. He is a past board member of the Southeastern Advertising Publishers Association (SAPA), past chair and member of PaperChain, past board members of AFCP, past board member of the Florida Press Association (FPA), past member of Independent Free Papers of America (IFPA), past member of the National Newspaper Association, past committee member of Free Paper INK, past faculty member of The Leadership Institute (TLI), and charter class graduate of TLI. Currently handles the Social Media Sites, Blog and Website for PaperChain https://www.paperchain.com/. He is currently the Director of the Florida Magazine for Florida Media Association.

J.W. also speaks at several conferences a year to groups and organizations.
J.W. also started, and manages THE NCMA Website Site, Blog and Social Media site for Associations and Publishers to use or share to their members or employees with Training PowerPoints and other very useful tips and articles, all FREE. Owens is a graduate of the University of Kentucky. Owens is also a graduate of the Disney Institute which was: the Experience Unparalleled Leadership Development & Training from Disney.

Prior to the Publishing Business; J.W.’s family owned a small newspapers and retail stores in Kentucky. He (age 10) swept the floors, swept the sidewalks and empty trash before school. After school, he cleaned the warehouse and put stock away. Saturdays worked all day and Sundays, they reset the store. He got paid $5 cash a week. This was where he learned the retail business inside and out.

After graduating High School in 3 years and College in 3 years, He was hired to handle the money and bank deposits for a major box retailer in Lexington, KY, then promoted a year later to a Buyer (which also handled advertising) for a Major Box Discount Retail Corp. covering several states with offices in Cleveland, Ohio. Three years later, He was again promoted to Vice President and General Manager of their entire Wholesale Division covering over 10 states….He later moved to Florida for the better weather. He saw an opportunity to start local papers and boy, did he, And MORE!
